Lismore siege: Lismore High School closed after gunshots reportedly fired
A SIEGE in Lismore, NSW has continued for more than 24 hours, with streets and a local high school remaining closed.
Police were called to the home on Dalley St, East Lismore, on the state’s north coast, about 4.30pm on Wednesday, over concerns for a man’s welfare.
As of 4.30pm today, the siege was continuing with police still on the scene.
Yesterday officers spoke to a man who made a number of threats. The man is believed to be alone in the home.
According to the Northern Star newspaper the 33-year-old man inside the home is not a resident in the street and is threatening to self-harm.
Neighbours close to the stand-off told the paperthat they heard gun shots shortly after police arrived yesterday.
“I was watching television and I heard the first gunshot, so I just went to the screen door and looked out, but I couldn’t see anything and then I thought maybe it wasn’t a gun shot,” Joyce Stuckey said.
“Then about five minutes later, I heard another one but I didn’t see or couldn’t find anybody so we didn’t know until the cops then came and said that it had been reported that there had been two gunshots and I said I had heard the two gunshots.”
Nine homes in Dalley St and Oakley Ave have been evacuated as a precaution.
Dalley St is closed between College Rd and Military Rd, while Oakley Ave is closed between College St and Military Rd.
The Rivers Secondary College, Lismore campus is closed today due to its proximity to the scene and students have been told to stay home. Updates will be available on the school’s Facebook page.
However, a police statement said the incident was not related to the school.
