Fast food chain Red Roosters surprising chicken menu change

This one is for all the middle children out there who made it. The ones who got the hand-me-downs while the youngest kids got fresh stuff.

The ones who were never big enough to score a try against their older siblings in backyard footy.

The ones who flew under the radar until they found startling success. This is for Red Rooster.

The middle child of Australian fast food cuisine. After years in the shadows of McDonald’s, KFC and Hungry Jacks, this chicken-based chain restaurant is coming to the fore.

It’s not as glossy or glamorous as a Guzman Y Gomez or a Grill’d. But Red Rooster is here, and it slaps.

The chain most commonly known for its roast chicken and chips has quietly updated their burgers, wraps and rolls – and it is for the better.

Gone are the days of a weirdly crumbed chicken patty type scenario. These have been replaced by nicely fried chicken. The classics of shredded rotisserie chicken remain on the menu.

If you’re feeling wild, sharp, on the edge, they have added a nice spicy burger and for those with a weird sickly sweet tooth while eating savoury food there is a barbecue chicken burger type set-up.

I was surprised munching into the Hellfire Tender Burger (previously referred to as the ‘nice spicy burger’) of the quality of the chicken. The nice soft bun and a spicy sauce that actually has a kick.

I typically avoid anything barbecue-based as I feel the sauces are way too sweet for my delicate palate, but again I was impressed by the BBQ Bacon Tender Burger. The salty bacon and seasoning cut through the 103g of sugar in the burger to make it easy to scoff down.

Red Rooster rotisserie classics like the Rooster Roll and Roast Chicken Roll provide an option you might think is healthier than other fast food outlets. In my experience, these were fresh, nicely seasoned with a dill and pickle type mayo.

So the next time you’ve got a hankering, don’t be afraid to pull in at the sign of the giant red rooster and enjoy some of the wares from this Aussie icon.
(Note: I am not a middle child.)

Red Rooster’s rolls, wraps and burgers rated

1. Hellfire Tender Burger – lovely fried chicken mixed with a hot sauce that actually provides a little kick. Would absolutely order again.

2. Reds Tender Burger – a classic of the chicken burger genre.

3. Flava Tender Wrap – it tastes healthy while still being nice. Unsure if actually healthy – sorry, I’m not a doctor.

4. Roast Chicken Roll – just like your mum used to make.

5. BBQ Bacon Tender Burger – if you love those sweet BBQ sauces this is probably your top pick.

6. Rippa Tender Roll – I’m not sure why but this one just didn’t hit.

7. Bacon & Cheese Rippa Tender- much like the BBQ burger, if you froth that type of sauce you’ll be happy with this.

8. Rooster Roll – the humble roll is a bit plain Jane for me but plays a solid role in the dynamics of roast chicken takeaways.
